We recognise that it is not easy to develop a sustainable organisational strategy that safeguards the heritage and offers new opportunities for visitors, whilst balancing the books.

With a fresh eye and practical approach, we enable and facilitate strategy development and planning. We aim to be insightful, supportive and analytical. We specialise in working with governing bodies and executive teams to get to the heart of the issues and map out a clear way ahead.

Our approach to business planning is based on over 50 years combined experience of direct service delivery, advice, support and assessment. We can also draw on additional financial, retailing and catering expertise. We encourage realism and ambition, taking pride in ensuring that the plans we produce are a succinct summary of the current situation and an accurate reflection of what’s possible.

Our project planning expertise has depth and breadth. We can not only help our clients to plan for a finite capital project, but make a positive difference to their organisation long-term. Our work frequently involves significant partnership development, with a focus on generating a consensus across disparate institutions on aims, objectives, outputs and outcomes. We also offer a life cycle approach to project planning from concept stage through to delivery and evaluation, such as at Quarr Abbey.

We often develop business and project plans in the context of emerging Heritage Lottery Fund applications.

  • Provided a format for senior staff to go away and consult with their respective teams and bring back considered feedback
  • We examined the concept of community engagement and university engagement and how these came together through activities
  • We helped to prioritise a wide range of activity and helped to resolve conflicting priorities
  • We examined further income generating opportunities
  • We provided a working draft for a new forward plan

Project description

MERL is a designated museum of rural life situated within the University of Reading and a recipient of HEFCE funding. CCN worked with the highly committed senior staff team to examine the shortcomings of the previous forward plan and to recommend improvements for the future plan. CCN facilitated a series of workshops with staff and developed a strategy to communicate with all staff and obtain feedback on future planning which would form the basis of a three year forward plan. Of particular concern was demonstrating the value of the organisation to the University and to student engagement but also to examine the strong community role enjoyed by the museum in the local area. These areas of activity were incorporated into a draft plan.

A high degree of prioritisation was required to evaluate the current operation and to set a timescale for many of the tasks. Consulting with staff we were able to steer discussions to consider sustainability options and clarify the vision for the museum for the next 3 years. This plan was developed against the backdrop of a successful HLF bid and the impact of this on the organisation was incorporated into the forward plan which was then submitted as part of a re accreditation application.
